Space Shuttle Challenger FLOWN insulation material
NASA's Space Shuttles were the world's first reusable spaceships. A total of six Space Shuttles were built: Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour.
Two Space Shuttles were lost in flight: Challenger (STS-51L) and Columbia (STS-107).
About 1'' triangle swatch of insulation material mounted on an 8x10 presentation with COA on the backside.
In early 1979, NASA contractor Rockwell started to build the Space Shuttle Challenger, OV-099. It was completed and delivered in 1982 and was the second operational orbiter after her sister ship Columbia. Challenger's maiden voyage was mission STS-6 on April 4, 1983, with astronauts Donald Peterson and Story Musgrave performing the first spacewalk. The orbiter flew 9 successful Space Shuttle missions between 1983 and 1985 and broke apart 73 seconds after the launch of STS-51L on January 28, 1986, killing the crew of 7 astronauts.
The source of this piece of the blanket is a scrapped part of the Shuttle by NASA. No material from the ill-fated flight STS-51L!
