Flown heatshield material material mounted on a 7x9'' rigid foam board certified on the backside.
Apollo 8 was the first mission to the Moon and back. It was the first manned mission to launch on the Saturn V and the crew took the first pictures of the Earth from deep space.
The source of this heatshield is a larger block formerly encased in lucite and given to NASA workers and VIPs as a recognition of their work in the Apollo program. Flown artifacts from Apollo 8 are very rare and in demand.
